A small fibro clad ex-housing commission dwelling is being transformed. The existing house has been insulated and re-clad by the owners, and now a mid-century inspired extension aims to provide a warm in winter / cool in summer living zone, with a strong connection to outdoor spaces and gardens beyond. The owners ‘feel the heat’ so excellent summer shade, and naturally cool spaces were a priority. Use of appropriate eave overhangs and shade slats achieve this, despite a less than ideal North West aspect and a smaller suburban block size. Thermal mass in the form of a feature recycled brick wall is added behind the wood stove, in an otherwise highly insulated, lightweight building. Locally custom made high performance windows are another stand out feature.
