This cosy and comfortable house needed to be very simple to build, with excellent thermal performance in a cold climate that receives regular winter snow. Off grid services were also required in this bush/farm location. The house was orientated Northwards to maximise winter solar gain, and thermal mass and wood heating was used. Upstairs bedrooms are passively heated by the wood heater flue and the natural tendency of heat to rise, and are heavily insulated. The house is powered by off grid solar PV system, solar hot water, rainwater storage, wood heating and wood & gas cooking. A large outdoor living area to the East features summer shade, winter sun and captures expansive mountain views. High bushfire risk is managed by position in the landscape, maintained fire breaks, material choices, building sealing, timber coatings and sprinklers.
